The national population of senior citizens continue to grow.  According to the US Census Bureau, the number of seniors will rise to over 83 million by 2050.  While some level of cognitive decline is a part of the normal aging process, we’re looking at around sixteen million seniors dealing with some soft of dementia. Some forgetfulness is normal plus certainly gets worse as both of us get older. It often takes the older generation longer to learn up-to-date things. They might  misplace everyday items or get confused at times. This behavior is not cause for concern. However, these easy problems can be an indicator of the early stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, then recent studies in cannabis plus cannabinoid supplementation demonstrate positive results in repairing cognitive damage in the brain at the cellular level.  There is also evidence of protecting otherwise healthy neurons plus slowing the effects of age on the human brain. The radio respected image of the marijuana smoker had led humanity to know that cannabis results in memory impairment, mental slowness, plus even loss of brain cells. However, this simply isn’t true. THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, acts as a neuroprotectant plus even repairs damaged brain cells in older adults. Stories from all over the world continue to confirm the medical benefits of cannabis.  With the legalization of marijuana across the country, the math community is becoming more focused on exploring the potential. Prevention of the onset of cognitive decline could greatly reduce the number of seniors suffering from debilitating brain disorders such as dementia plus Alzheimer’s. Cannabinoids may just be the key to aging gracefully.
