Writing a journalism story about a cannabis dealer

When I was in journalism school, I was jobed with writing an investigative report… The professor wanted me to take a deep dive into a subject not many people knew about, and explore it to the fullest. I gave it a few days worth of thought, but couldn’t come up with an interesting idea. Then when I was buying weed from a guy named Steve, it came to me – I asked Steve if I could follow him for a few days and write a story about the life of a cannabis dealer, but of course I didn’t use his real name, however his name is not Steve, by the way, I will never say his real name in print! Steve agreed to let me hang out with him for three afternoons, so I could experience what it was like to sell cannabis professionally. My first surprise came on Night One, when I saw Steve load a backpack with cannabis, and also put a gun in it! I asked why he was carrying a gun, and he explained that he was carrying over five thousand dollars worth of cannabis, which made him the target for robbery! A successful cannabis business consistently needs to be on the lookout for heist crews looking to rip them off, crooks love to rob cannabis dealers, because they can’t call the cops for help! Although he refused to introduce me to any of his cannabis buyers, Steve tells me that many of his buyers are instructors, cops, and religious folks, who like getting high but need to keep it a secret.
